Homespy started as personal project that was created out of a desire to improve on existing solutions at the time. After deciding to put the tool on the internet for the general public, it has become a go-to place for anyone who wants to extract information from their appliance's serial and model numbers.
Since going live in February 2023, tens of thousands of serial numbers have been submitted. See how our algorithm is performing for our users on our statistics page.
Regular homeowners make up the majority of our users however many wide-ranging industries big and small rely upon us such as homeowners insurance, real estate agencies, energy solution companies, home warranty companies, home inspectors, appliance resellers, appliance repairmen and many more.
Some manufacturers have a clear and concise serial number convention. Often they will use a single alphanumeric character which corresponds to a set year. Whirlpool brands are a good example of this but even then there are outliers and stipulations. More often than not, it doesn't always correspond to a singular date, as the alphanumeric character gets recycled every 20-30 years.
Other manufacturers use the bare minimum in their serial number conventions. Manufacturer's like LG and Frigidaire for example, will only encode the last digit of the year it was manufactured.
For example a Frigidaire dishwasher with a serial number TH00293833 could have been manufactured in 1990, 2000, 2010 or 2020.
Finally you have psuedo manufacturers like Kenmore who outsource their designs to other manufacturers. Kenmore will prefix a specific model number in order to indicate the manufacturer which is used to determine serial number convention needed to decode it.
It's for these problems that our tool was made. In cases of an ambiguous manufacture date from the serial number, we feed the model number into an algorithm and do our best to gather and
process the data in order to predict the manufacture date(s) supplied by the serial number as accurately as possible.
It is not always perfect and there isn't always enough data to make a
prediction but it should at least give a rough idea of how old the appliance is.
With a large pool of data we can also start providing data on different manufacturer's average life expectancy and with enough data points begin breaking down the manufacturer's specific model types average life expectancy.
Determining the age of an appliance can be challenging for several reasons, including:
Our API that decodes appliance serial numbers is a software interface that allows other applications to access information about appliances based on their serial numbers. Our API enables developers to integrate appliance information into their own applications, making it possible to retrieve details such as the manufacturer, model number, production date, and other relevant details.
Our API uses algorithms and databases to decode the serial numbers and provide accurate and up-to-date information to users. With a RESTful design and secure authentication, the API makes it easy for developers to integrate appliance information into their own applications, and for end-users to access the information they need.
Whether it is used for repair, maintenance, warranty claims, or other purposes, our API for decoding appliance serial numbers provides valuable information and is an essential tool for those in the industry.
Our Appliance OCR API swiftly extracts serial and model numbers from images or scanned documents, streamlining data retrieval processes; this helps to ensure high accuracy in identifying and extracting serial and model information.
Designed to seamlessly integrate with various home appliance applications and systems with as little heavy lifting as possible.
Appliance serial and models numbers are highly specific, making a simple error in one digit can throw off the expected age, value and life expectancy significantly. We aim to minimize the risk of human errors associated with manual data entry, and increase the accuracy of decisions.
Our appliance and HVAC serial number decoder application is a tool used to interpret and decode serial numbers for appliances and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Our application allows users to input the serial number of their appliance or HVAC system and receive detailed information about the product, such as the manufacturer, model number, production date, and other relevant details. This information can be useful for repair, maintenance, warranty claims, and other purposes.
The application uses algorithms and databases to decode the serial numbers and provide accurate and up-to-date information to users. With a user-friendly interface and accurate results, the appliance and HVAC serial number decoder application is a valuable resource for homeowners, technicians, and others in the industry.
